What is the German emissions sticker and what is it used for?
Every vehicle needs an emissions sticker
All vehicles entering designated urban low-emission zones require an emissions sticker.
Avoid unnecessary fines
Avoid a fine even if your vehicle meets the required emissions standard.

The emissions sticker confirms that a motor vehicle meets the applicable emissions limits. It permits entry into designated urban low-emission zones in Germany, whose entrances and exits are marked with UMWELTZONE signs. A supplementary sign indicates which vehicle emissions classes are allowed to enter.

Vehicles without an emissions sticker may not enter the green zone. Drivers risk a fine of €80 and penalty points on their driving record. This applies even if a vehicle without a sticker otherwise meets the emissions requirements for one. These rules apply to all vehicles, including those registered abroad, such as passenger cars, trucks and buses, whether used by businesses or tourists. We therefore recommend informing friends planning to drive to Germany and enter one of its expanding low-emission zones.
